The disavow file that nuked a brand's own rankings
Word is an ecommerce team uploaded a 2,000-domain disavow on a spam scare, then watched a quarter of their non-brand traffic evaporate. Spotted the autopsy: half those "toxic" domains were legit low-DR niche blogs that Google was happily counting.
The mistake is treating third-party "toxicity scores" as gospel and disavowing on a slider.
What the people who've been burned actually do —
— Disavow only what you can prove you (or a bad SEO) built — paid network footprints, obvious PBNs you recognize. Google ignores most junk on its own.
— Never disavow a domain sending real referral or organic-adjacent signal just because a tool painted it red.
Multiple recoveries show the same lesson: the disavow tool is a scalpel mislabeled as a flamethrower. Watch this space.
