The 5-question gate before you touch the disavow tool
Most audits skip straight to uploading a file. Run this gate first — if any answer is no, stop.
— Do you have a manual action in Search Console, or specific evidence of a self-built spam campaign? No manual action, no documented bad SEO contractor? Stop.
— Did you (or someone you paid) build these links? If they appeared on their own, they're crawler junk, not your liability.
— Can you name the links by hand, not by a vendor's color code? If your list comes from a 'risk score', you're filtering noise.
— Has organic traffic actually dropped in a way that maps to link timing? Correlation or coincidence?
— Would Google reasonably read this pattern as manipulation?
Google's own line: the vast majority of sites never need disavow.
Reality check: the gate exists so you don't disavow your way out of links that were never counting against you.
