A local business disavowed 12,000 domains in one click. Their Maps and organic both flatlined — unchanged.
The myth: small sites are fragile, so disavow aggressively to protect them.
A plumbing company's marketing vendor ran a one-click "clean my backlinks" feature, disavowing 12,000 domains overnight. The owner feared he'd nuked something.
Good news and bad news: nothing changed. Local pack position, organic clicks, and call volume were identical 90 days later. The 12,000 were scraper directories that carried no weight in either direction.
Actually, for a local SMB, rankings lean on proximity, reviews, and category relevance — not on a pile of auto-generated directory links. Disavowing them was as consequential as deleting spam from a folder you never open.
Reality check: the one-click disavow button mostly sells peace of mind. The links it removes were already weightless.
