Myth: lower your bounce rate to rank higher

Myth: lower your bounce rate to rank higher

The claim that Google reads your Analytics bounce rate as a ranking signal has survived a decade of denials and one structural problem: Google doesn't have your bounce rate.

Bounce rate is a Google Analytics metric, computed in your property from your tag. The ranking system and Analytics are separate products; the search team has repeatedly said it doesn't pull GA data. Worse, "bounce" can mean a satisfied user who got their answer and left — a good outcome dressed as a bad metric.

What search systems plausibly observe is pogo-sticking on the SERP (clicking a result, returning, clicking another) — a result-quality signal, distinct from your on-site bounce.

— Optimize for the searcher getting their answer, not for an on-site dwell metric
— A high-bounce page that satisfies the query is fine; chasing dwell time with walls of text is the actual mistake

Method note: repeated Google statements (Mueller, Illyes) plus the architectural separation of GA and Search.
Confidence: high
