Myth: more articles equals more topical authority

Myth: more articles equals more topical authority

The "publish 100 posts to dominate a niche" framing treats topical authority as a counter that ticks up with volume. The evidence suggests it's about completeness of an entity map, not article count.

Topical authority — a site's demonstrated coverage of a subject — is inferred by search engines from how thoroughly your content connects the entities and sub-topics of a field. Twenty articles that fully map a topic's question space can outperform 100 that overlap and leave gaps.

Marie Haynes and others have documented sites adding hundreds of thin posts and seeing authority drop — likely because low-quality volume triggers site-wide quality assessment (the Helpful Content signal operates sitewide, not per-page).

— Map the sub-topics a true expert would cover, then fill gaps; don't chase a post quota
— Pruning thin overlap pages has lifted sitewide rankings in multiple documented cases

Caveat: causation here is hard — pruning often coincides with other fixes. Treat "prune" as plausible, not proven.
Confidence: medium
