Myth: "Target keywords under KD 30 and you'll rank"

Every course repeats it. I tested KD on 60 keywords across Ahrefs, Semrush and Mangools on a real site.

The problem: each tool computes Keyword Difficulty differently, mostly from referring domains of the top 10. None of them read intent or content depth.

Ahrefs KD:
➕ Honest, based purely on backlinks to rank in top 10
➖ Says nothing about whether you can match the content

Semrush KD:
➕ Folds in more signals
➖ Often 20+ points higher for the same term, scares you off winnable ones

Best for: a rough sort, fine. A go/no-go decision, never.

Real correction: a 'KD 15' term with three Reddit threads ranking is a layup; a 'KD 15' with all brand sites is impossible. The number can't see that.

Price-vs-value: don't pay extra for a 'more accurate' KD, they're all proxies.
