The follow-up that buried a live story

The follow-up that buried a live story

A hardware startup had a reporter half-interested in their launch. Then came the follow-up sequence: day 2, day 4, day 6 — "just bumping this," "circling back," "any thoughts?" By the third nudge the reporter muted the thread. A warm lead went cold from pure pestering.

What killed it wasn't following up — it was following up with nothing new. Each message added zero information and one more reason to feel hounded.

We rebuilt the cadence around value, not guilt. One follow-up only, and only if it carried something fresh: a new data cut, a customer willing to talk on record, an exclusive angle the reporter could own. If we had nothing to add, we stayed silent and let the first pitch breathe.

The next launch, we sent the pitch, then a single follow-up four days later that offered an under-embargo benchmark no competitor had. The reporter replied within an hour: "This is the part I was missing." It ran as a feature with 6 syndicated (republished) pickups.

Lesson: a follow-up is a second pitch, not a reminder that you exist. If it doesn't give the reporter a new reason to say yes, it only gives them a reason to mute you.
