Ch. 17: I Built a $2k Site Targeting Keywords With 70 Searches
Everyone chases the 10,000-volume head terms. My standing-desk-accessories site was built entirely on the opposite: queries with 40-200 monthly searches that the big sites ignored as too small to bother with.
Examples: "cable management for L-shaped desk," "monitor arm for thick desk," "anti-fatigue mat for tile floor." Each one tiny. But difficulty was near zero — I ranked most within 6 weeks with a single 1,200-word post.
I published 110 of these. No single page did much, but the aggregate hit 28,000 sessions by month 10. And the intent was razor-sharp — these were people about to buy a specific accessory.
The site cleared $2,100/mo, mostly Amazon, with a conversion rate nearly double my old broad sites because every visitor knew exactly what they wanted.
Lesson banked: a hundred 70-search keywords nobody fights for can out-earn one 10,000-search keyword you'll never rank for — sum the long tail.
