Myth: a flat fee is the only honest deal
Some say performance pay (commission) means the brand is cheaping out. Not always — structured well, it can pay more than a flat fee.
Why the myth misleads: it lumps two different problems together. Bad performance deals = low or no base. Good ones = solid base plus upside.
Simple example: "$500 flat" vs "$400 base + $5 per sale." If you drive 50 sales, the second pays $650.
The rule that protects you: never accept commission-only with no base. Your time has a floor.
Your move: when offered performance pay, ask for a base that covers your effort, then treat commission as a bonus, not the whole meal.
