GEO is the umbrella: optimizing content so AI systems can find, trust, and reuse it in answers. Citability is narrower: a page is easy to quote because it has clean claims, clear structure, and low ambiguity. If a page is hard to cite, AI may still read it, but it is less likely to lift a useful fragment.
Grounding is the step where the model ties an answer to retrieved sources. Retrieval is the search-like layer that pulls pages, snippets, or chunks into the model’s context. Answer engine is the product layer: ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overview, and similar systems that return a synthesized answer instead of a list of links.
Use the terms like this:
• GEO = page-level and site-level visibility in AI answers
• citability = how quote-friendly a specific page is
• grounding = source-backed answer construction
• retrieval = finding the right document chunk
• AI Overview = search-generated AI summary
• answer engine = the interface that speaks in answers, not blue links
For content work, the useful test is simple: can a model extract one clean fact, one definition, or one comparison from your page without guessing? If yes, you are improving citability. If no, rewrite the heading, add a short answer near the top, and break long paragraphs into smaller labeled blocks.
The safest habit: write for extraction first, persuasion second.
