"Longer content ranks better — pad to 2,000 words."

"Longer content ranks better — pad to 2,000 words."

A health site bet the other way and won.

They had 90 articles bloated to 2,500+ words with throat-clearing intros and "in this article we'll cover" filler — written to hit a word count a 2019 blog post told them mattered. Engagement was terrible: average time-on-page under 40 seconds.

They cut 45 of them to 900-1,300 tight words, answer-first, and left 45 bloated as control. Three months: the trimmed group gained an average 2.1 positions and time-on-page rose to 95 seconds. The bloated control stayed flat.

Word count correlates with ranking because thorough answers tend to be longer — not because length itself ranks. Padding a thin answer to 2,000 words just makes a thin answer take longer to read.

Cut the filler. The pages got shorter and ranked better. (Correlation is not the instruction manual.)
