ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI answers do not “pick the best article.” They pick sources that are easy to trust, easy to parse, and easy to reuse.
What usually gets cited:
• pages with a clear answer near the top
• named authors, brands, or organizations
• strong topical focus instead of broad fluff
• facts that match other reliable pages
• clean structure: headings, lists, short paragraphs
What gets skipped:
• thin pages built around one keyword
• walls of text with no obvious answer
• affiliate pages that hide the real point
• claims with no supporting context
• pages that look promotional before informative
If you want citations, write like a source, not like a landing page. Put the answer early, add definitions, separate facts from opinions, and make the page easy to quote. AI systems prefer passages they can lift without guessing what the page is about.
One useful test: if a human skims the first 10 seconds and cannot tell what the page proves, AI often can’t cite it either.
