Automating internal links works only when relevance beats volume every time

For large sites, stop thinking “add more links” and start thinking “add fewer, better links.” A safe system uses rules, not guesses: match by topic cluster, intent, and page type; exclude pages that already have enough links; and never let every template point to the same money page.

A practical setup looks like this:
• link from hub pages to supporting pages
• link from supporting pages back to the hub
• link between siblings only when the query intent overlaps
• block tags, filters, and thin pages from automatic linking
• cap links per section so one page does not become a dump site

Keep anchors natural. Rotate between exact, partial, and descriptive phrases, but do not force keyword repetition. If a page can only fit an internal link by changing the sentence awkwardly, skip it. That one skip is better than building a sitewide pattern that looks engineered.

Automation should run on a whitelist of page templates and on a relevance score built from shared terms, entities, or manual clusters. Then review samples at the URL level: if a page gets many outbound links but no clear purpose, remove it. Link equity should flow through useful paths, not circular loops.
