Manual internal linking vs an auto-linking plugin
Month 1: 90-post finance site. Internal linking by hand was eating hours. I installed Link Whisper to automate it — it suggests and inserts links by keyword. Bliss, briefly.
Month 3: the plugin had created a mess. It linked the anchor "best broker" to twelve different pages because the phrase appeared everywhere. Google had no idea which page I wanted to rank for "best broker." Classic keyword cannibalization, self-inflicted.
The turn: I audited every auto-link. 40% pointed somewhere unhelpful or diluted a target. The tool optimized for link COUNT, not link strategy.
Month 5: I kept the plugin only for finding orphan pages and suggesting candidates, then approved each link manually with intentional anchor text — one canonical target per money keyword.
Month 7: the cannibalization cleared, my main "best broker" page rose from position 9 to 3.
The takeaway: auto-linkers are great at finding opportunities, dangerous at executing them. They scatter anchors and confuse Google about your canonical page. Use them as a suggestion engine, never as autopilot. Internal links are a strategy, not a chore to fully automate away.
