The order I layer monetization onto a site
I slapped display ads on a 2-month-old site once and made $11 while wrecking the page experience. Now I layer money on in a strict sequence tied to traffic milestones. Here's the ladder.
— Under 10k sessions/month: affiliate links ONLY, zero ads. Page speed and trust matter more than $11 of ad revenue. I add contextual product links inside helpful content
— 10k-25k: apply for a mid-tier ad network, but only below-fold and in-content, never a sticky header eating my CTR
— 25k-50k: add a free email opt-in (lead magnet PDF) to capture traffic I'm currently renting from Google
— 50k+: apply to a premium ad network (the 25k+ RPM tier), now the volume justifies the page tradeoff
— Only THEN consider a digital product or my own offer to the email list
On my last site, holding ads until 12k sessions kept Core Web Vitals green and rankings climbing. When I finally added them, RPM was $18 because the premium network accepted a fast, trusted site.
The setback: on an earlier site I added ads at 3k sessions, speed scores tanked, and I think it cost me rankings worth more than the ad income.
The takeaway: Monetization has an order. Affiliate first, ads at scale, email always, your own product last — adding the heavy stuff too early can cost more in rankings than it earns.
