Canonical tags fail when duplicate pages are too close in structure
When generated pages differ only by one field, don’t let every URL fight for indexing. Pick one clean “main” page per cluster and make the rest support it. That usually means:
— one indexable page for the strongest search intent;
— close variants canonicalized to that page;
— internal links pointing to the canonical, not the duplicates.
But canonical tags are only a hint. If the duplicate set has weak content changes, inconsistent titles, or mixed internal links, search engines may ignore the tag and choose their own version. Fix the template first: unique H1, unique intro, unique body blocks, and only one clear target URL per topic family. Keep parameter URLs out of navigation.
Use noindex when a page has value for users but should not compete in search. Use canonical when the page is a near-copy and you want signals folded into a preferred URL. If both page versions must exist, make them visibly different enough that the canonical is a backup, not the whole strategy.
A good rule: if two pages would look interchangeable to a human after 10 seconds, they are not separate index targets. Fold signals early, keep one winner, and let the rest help it instead of cannibalizing it.
