Publishers usually report the same pattern: fewer clicks on generic queries, steadier clicks on branded or niche terms, and more pageviews that arrive with clearer intent. AI answers often satisfy the broad question on the spot, so the visit only happens when the reader needs depth, a comparison, or a source they trust.
What tends to change in analytics:
— landing pages with simple definitions lose the most
— articles with unique data, examples, or tools hold up better
— pages that answer follow-up questions get the remaining clicks
— brand mentions matter even when the click is missing
The useful response is not chasing every impression. Tighten pages that are easy to quote, add original tables or steps, and make the first screen answerable in one screen but expandable below. If a topic can be summarized in one paragraph, AI will often do exactly that.
Track more than sessions: monitor branded search, direct visits, assisted conversions, and mentions in AI responses. The traffic mix may shrink on some pages, but the pages that keep earning clicks usually do one thing better than a summary: they give proof, specificity, or a next step.
