Great reviews, wrong words
Meet a contractor in Portland with 90 glowing reviews that all said the same thing: "great guys, highly recommend." Warm, generic, and ranking him for absolutely nothing.
Reviews are keyword content. His said nothing about kitchens, decks, or Portland.
The review-keyword playbook:
— After a job, prompt gently: "if you mention the kitchen remodel and the neighborhood, it helps others find us"
— Never script the review — just nudge the topic
— Reply to each one repeating the service and city naturally
— Target one service per month so the keywords don't all clump
— Track which phrases start appearing in your rankings
First month, the new reviews started naming services. Rankings stayed flat — Google needed volume.
Month three the dam broke: "deck builder Portland," "kitchen remodel Sellwood" — phrases now living in his reviews — pulled him into the map pack for each. Project inquiries up 30 percent, and bigger jobs.
The lesson: "highly recommend" ranks you for "recommend." Reviews that name the service and the place become the keywords you've been begging your website to rank for.
