Setting up B2B social listening on a budget: a checklist
The question: how do you catch brand and category conversation — including the dark-social mentions you're not tagged in — without enterprise tooling?
Much B2B conversation happens where you can't be tagged: Slack communities, private DMs, screenshots. Listening is about catching the visible fraction systematically.
The setup checklist:
— Create saved searches for your brand, your top 3 competitors, and your category term.
— Search both tagged and untagged mentions — most mentions never tag you.
— Set alerts for your founders' and execs' names, not just the company.
— Monitor the comment sections of category thought leaders weekly; that's where buyers gather.
— Track screenshot-shares by searching distinctive phrases from your own posts.
— Log sentiment manually for the first month to calibrate before automating.
Limitations: free tools miss closed communities and image-only mentions entirely, so your sample skews toward public, text-based talk — a biased slice. Sentiment scoring is noisy at low volume. Treat as directional.
What it means for B2B: the conversations that move deals happen in private spaces you'll never fully monitor, so weight the signals you can see accordingly.
Bottom line: a manual, well-scoped listening routine beats an expensive tool pointed at the wrong, visible-only fraction.
