Rewriting button copy that actually fits
"Use action verbs on your button." [MOSTLY MYTH] It spread as a cargo-cult rule, so every site shouts "Get Started." The truth: generic verbs describe your funnel, not the visitor's motivation. Rewrite in three steps:
— Finish this sentence as the visitor: "I want to ___." That phrase is your button.
— Match the verb to the commitment level. "Buy now" on a cold visitor is a proposal on a first date.
— Add the value or remove the friction: "See pricing," "Start free, no card."
— Read it aloud after the headline. Does the page now make a coherent promise-then-ask?
The nuance the verb rule skips: the best button copy lowers perceived cost, not just commands action. "Submit" never lost to "Get Started" because of the verb. It lost because nobody wants to submit.
