A competitor content teardown: a 6-point checklist

A competitor content teardown: a 6-point checklist

The question: what is a competitor's content actually doing that you can learn from, beyond 'they post more'?

Most competitive analysis stops at vanity counts. A useful teardown looks at structure and signal, not volume.

The checklist, run on their last 20 posts:
— Format mix: what share is document, video, text, poll? Note their bets.
— Hook pattern: do they lead with a number, a question, a contrarian claim?
— Comment quality: are the responders their buyers, or other marketers? (Marketer-only audiences signal low commercial value.)
— Reply behavior: do they reply to comments? Reply rate correlates with re-surfacing.
— Topic-to-engagement map: which themes actually pull comments, not likes.
— CTA placement: body, comment, or none?

Limitations: you see public engagement, not reach or conversion — a post with high comments may still drive zero pipeline. Marketer-heavy comment sections may reflect audience, not intent. Treat findings as hypotheses, not proof.

What it means for B2B: the most useful steal is rarely the topic — it's the hook structure and the audience composition you can infer from who comments.

Bottom line: teardown for mechanism, not envy — copy the structure that works, not the topic that's already taken.
