Q: My GA4 sessions are way higher than they should be — how do I diagnose it step by step?
A: Inflated sessions almost always trace to one of three things:
— Check for a missing or duplicate tag: view source for two GA4 snippets, or a tag firing on every SPA route as a fresh session.
— Self-referral: Admin → Data Streams → 'List unwanted referrals' — add your payment and login subdomains.
— UTM mid-session: any link to your own site with utm_ tags restarts the session; strip internal UTMs.
— Confirm in Realtime by clicking around — each new session there means a config leak.
TL;DR: Hunt duplicate tags, exclude self-referrals, and kill internal UTM links — that trims phantom sessions.
