The listening plan for launch day, hour by hour
It was a Tuesday launch when a fitness-app startup nearly missed the most important signal of the day — because nobody was assigned to watch the right window.
The turn was a shift schedule. Hours 0-3: watch for the broken-link, wrong-price, 'it won't load' cluster — operational, not opinion. Hours 3-8: track first-impression sentiment and which feature gets named most. Hours 8-24: measure share of voice against the category and log the top three objections.
Their hour-2 monitor caught a payment bug spiking 'can't checkout' mentions; engineering pushed a fix before it trended. By hour 24, the most-mentioned feature wasn't the one they'd marketed — it was the offline mode. They rewrote the next day's ads around it.
The takeaway: launch listening has three phases with different jobs. Watch for breakage first, sentiment second, positioning third — and staff each window deliberately.
