Exact-match keyword URLs vs folder taxonomy

Exact-match keyword URLs vs folder taxonomy

Two URL philosophies for scaled pages. Pick before you generate 10k of them — changing later costs a redirect map.

1. Flat exact-match (/best-crm-for-realtors): max keyword in slug, no hierarchy.
— Use when pages are standalone and intent is the whole story.
— Cost: no breadcrumb structure, weak topical clustering, ugly at scale.
2. Folder taxonomy (/crm/industry/real-estate): hierarchy encodes relationships.
— Use when pages cluster into pillars and you want breadcrumb + parent-child internal links automatically.
— Cost: slightly longer slugs, fewer exact-match keywords up front.
3. Decision gate: do these pages need to link to each other by category? Yes → folders. No → flat.
4. Guardrail: pick ONE pattern per template. Mixed patterns break automated internal linking.
5. Never put a parameter where a path should be if the page is indexable.

Rollback: 301 map old→new, ship once, monitor 404s for 30 days.

Ship gate: don't publish until all boxes are checked.
