Last-click vs first-click: who gets paid for the rebill?
New to recurring? Here's a quiet trap. "Attribution" just means: which affiliate gets credit for a sale. Two common rules:
— First-click: the person who first sent the visitor wins.
— Last-click: whoever sent them right before they paid wins.
Most recurring programs use last-click. Why it matters: a tool sends a renewal email, the user clicks an affiliate link inside it, and that affiliate can steal your future rebills.
In plain English: last-click rewards whoever was closest to the "Buy" button, not who introduced the product.
Example: you brought a customer paying $30/month at 20% ($6/mo). If a coupon site grabs the last click before month 4, their cookie may overwrite yours, and you lose that $6 stream.
Pick last-click programs only when you control the final touchpoint (your own email, your own page).
Try today: open one program's terms and find the word "attribution."
