Deep dive: autoplay video hero vs static image hero
Video backgrounds in the hero look premium, so the assumption is they convert. The evidence is more conditional than the design trend suggests.
What the research shows: video can lift conversion when it carries information a static frame can't — EyeWonder and various landing-page case studies report 20-30% lifts where video demonstrates a product in use. But Google's own web performance research is blunt about the cost: hero video is among the heaviest things you can load, and every additional second to Largest Contentful Paint correlates with measurable bounce increases (the SOASTA/Akamai aggregate found bounce probability rising ~32% as load goes from 1 to 3 seconds).
The mechanism is a tradeoff between persuasion and time-to-first-meaning. A static hero renders the value proposition essentially instantly — message match is available before the visitor decides to stay. An autoplay video delays that meaning behind a load, and on mobile data it often doesn't autoplay at all, leaving a poster frame that should have just been the static hero in the first place.
Practical implication for affiliate landers: use video only when motion encodes the offer — a tool's UI in action, a result happening. If the video is ambient B-roll of smiling people, it's pure weight with no message-match payoff; ship the static frame. When you do use video, the poster image must stand alone as a complete hero, because a large share of mobile users will only ever see it.
