Buying links in the wrong country
Word from a few profiles targeting US SERPs: their loudest links come from .ru, .in, and .id donors with no English traffic — bought cheap, counted proudly, ranking for nothing. A geo and language mismatch the audit never flagged.
The mistake is auditing link quantity without auditing where the donor's audience actually lives.
What the geo-aware operators check —
— Pull each major donor's top traffic countries in Ahrefs. Links from sites whose audience can't read your page carry thin relevance for your target market.
— For local or national SERPs, weight donors that already rank and pull traffic in your target geo. A mid-DR in-market site beats a high-DR offshore link farm.
Multiple offshore-heavy profiles look big and rank small. A link's geography is part of its relevance. Watch this space.
