SEO Plugin Sitemap vs Hand-Rolled: Where Plugins Cost You
Yoast/RankMath/Sitemap-generators are fine defaults. Hand-roll when you hit these specific limits.
Keep the plugin when:
— Standard pages/posts/taxonomies, under 50k URLs per type.
— You want zero maintenance and auto-ping on publish.
Replace with custom output when:
— You need conditional exclusion logic (in-stock only, published-and-not-thin).
— Image or video sitemap needs custom field mapping the plugin can't reach.
— Plugin caps child files at a count you've outgrown, or pads lastmod for every URL.
Known plugin failure: many auto-include URLs you've set to noindex, creating index/sitemap conflict.
Pass/fail:
— ✅ Every URL in the sitemap is indexable (no noindex, no canonical-elsewhere).
— ✅ Excluded states (drafts, OOS) never leak in.
Definition of done: the sitemap reflects your indexing rules, whoever generates it.
