Playbook: audit backlinks and build a disavow file without nuking good links
I ran a full toxic-link pass on a real penalized-ish site in Ahrefs and Semrush. The order matters or you'll disavow links you wanted.

The 6 steps:
— Export all referring domains, not URLs. You disavow at domain level 95% of the time.
— Sort by DR/AS ascending and eye the bottom 20% first — that's where the garbage lives.
— Flag patterns, not single links: exact-match anchor spam, foreign-language link farms, repeated footer sitewides.
— Cross-check anything 'toxic' against GSC links. If it sends real clicks, keep it.
— Build the file as domain: entries only, one per line, UTF-8, no headers.
— Wait — only submit if you have a manual action or clear negative SEO. Otherwise don't.

Ahrefs:
➕ Cleanest referring-domain export and anchor breakdown
➖ No native 'toxicity score' (honestly a plus)
Semrush:
➕ Built-in toxicity score + one-click disavow export
➖ The score over-flags; trust it blindly and you'll hurt yourself

Best for: manual judgment → Ahrefs. Guided workflow → Semrush.
Pick this if you have a penalty. Skip the disavow entirely if you don't — most sites shouldn't.
