Ad refresh: extra money or extra risk?
Ad refresh means reloading an ad slot with a new ad after a visitor has stayed a while, running a fresh auction for the same spot.
— No refresh: each slot earns once, clean and safe, but a reader on the page for 5 minutes only ever saw one ad there.
— With refresh: more ad views, more revenue, but if done too fast advertisers feel cheated and your prices can fall.
Tiny example: refresh a slot only after it's been visible 30 seconds and the tab is active. Refreshing a slot nobody is looking at is wasted and risky.
1. Refresh after 30s of visibility.
2. Only when the tab is in focus.
In plain English: refreshing slowly on ads people actually see earns more; refreshing carelessly burns trust.
