Referral program vs organic invite: growth tool by member quality
Both grow the room. They pull different people.
Referral program (incentivized):
☐ Use when you need volume fast and can absorb mixed quality.
☐ Strength: predictable, trackable, scales with reward size.
☐ Weakness: incentive attracts reward-seekers, not believers — retention of referred members runs lower.
Organic invite (members share because it's good):
☐ Use when quality and culture-fit matter more than speed.
☐ Strength: invited members arrive pre-sold, retain better, match the culture.
☐ Weakness: slow, unpredictable, can't be forced.
The tradeoff: referrals buy speed with quality; organic buys quality with patience.
The metric that decides: compare 30-day retention of referred vs organic members. If referred retention is under half of organic, your reward is buying the wrong people — lower it or gate it behind one real action.
