Trending audio hook vs original-audio hook
A creator rode trending sounds for reach. One video used a viral audio under the opener and pulled 240k views — but three-second retention was 44% and the follow conversion was near zero. The trend brought the wrong crowd, there for the sound, not the message.
We ran the next video on original audio, voice forward, hook clean: "I quit the trend that got me 200k views, and here's why." Views dropped to 71k, but retention hit 68% and follows per thousand quadrupled.
Here's the tradeoff I watched play out — trending audio buys reach but spends relevance. Original audio buys relevance but starts cold.
The result over a month: trend videos won the view count, original-audio videos won the audience. The channel only grew once we stopped chasing the loud number.
The lesson: borrow a trend when you want a spike, use your own voice when you want a following. They are not the same goal.
