The perfect pitch sent to the wrong human

The perfect pitch sent to the wrong human

A climate-tech brand had a strong story and a 300-name media list. They blasted it. Open rates were fine; replies were near zero, and two reporters flagged them as spam. The pitch was good. The targeting was reckless.

The list was built by job title — "reporter," "editor" — not by beat (the subject a journalist actually covers). They'd pitched a carbon-accounting story to sports desks, lifestyle writers, a crossword editor. To those people it was noise, and noise is how you earn a block.

We threw out the title-based list. We rebuilt it by reading recent bylines: who has actually written about emissions reporting in the last 90 days, in their own words, not as a press rewrite. The new list was 41 names instead of 300.

The smaller, sharper send changed everything. Reply rate jumped to 22%, no spam flags, and the story landed 9 placements — every one from a writer whose beat it genuinely fit.

Lesson: a media list sorted by job title is a spam list with extra steps. Reporters cover beats, not titles — pitch the byline, not the inbox.
