The release that hid its own news

The release that hid its own news

A cybersecurity company sent me a release to critique: 640 words, and the actual news — a first-of-its-kind breach-detection benchmark — didn't appear until paragraph five. The opening was three sentences of "a leading provider of innovative solutions." No reporter reads to paragraph five of that.

We tested it brutally. I forwarded the release to a friendly reporter and asked, "what's the story here?" Her answer: "I genuinely can't tell." The news existed; the structure had buried it alive.

We rewrote it inverted-pyramid style — the way news is actually built, most important fact first. New first line led with the benchmark number and why it was a first. Boilerplate dropped to the bottom. We cut 640 words to 290 and added one chart.

The rewritten version went out to the same list. Three reporters who'd ignored version one replied to version two; one said, "oh, THIS is interesting — why didn't the first one say so?" It earned 8 placements.

Lesson: if a reporter can't find your news in the first sentence, you don't have a release — you have a paragraph of throat-clearing wrapped around a story you forgot to tell.
