The study journalists wanted but couldn't quote

A SaaS brand commissioned a genuinely good survey: 2,400 respondents, a surprising finding about remote-work burnout. Three reporters asked to cover it. All three went quiet.

The reason surfaced in one reply: "I can't run this without methodology I can defend to my editor." The brand had published a glossy infographic and a headline number — but no sample size on the page, no fieldwork dates, no margin of error, no who-ran-it. To a journalist, an unsourced stat is a liability, not a gift.

We fixed it in an afternoon. We added a plain methodology box: sample size, dates, weighting, the research partner's name. We gave each finding a citable one-line phrasing and a downloadable data table.

The re-pitch turned silence into coverage. Two of the three reporters came back; the study earned 9 placements and became a linkable asset (a page others reference) that kept pulling links for months — 30-plus referring domains over the quarter, mostly unsolicited, because other writers could finally trust it enough to link.

Lesson: a stat without visible methodology is uncitable, no matter how good it is. Reporters don't link to numbers — they link to numbers they can stand behind.
