Mistake: opening a negotiation on price
Failure mode: creator says "$2,000." You say "can you do $1,500?" Now you are haggling on one number and whoever blinks loses. You either overpay or sour the relationship.
Fix: negotiate the package, not the price. Trade variables.
Phase 1 — Map the levers before the call: deliverables count, usage rights, exclusivity window, payment timing, content format, CPA bonus.
Phase 2 — Anchor on scope: "Our budget for this slot is $1,500. Here's what fits." Then adjust deliverables to the number.
Phase 3 — Trade up: if they hold at $2,000, ask for whitelisting rights or an exclusivity clause in exchange.
Decision rule: never lower their headline rate without removing a deliverable or adding a brand benefit. Every concession buys something.
Checklist:
— Walk-away number set before the call
— At least three non-price levers listed
— One thing you can give cheaply that they value highly
Definition of done: both sides changed terms, not just the price tag.
A price-only negotiation has a loser. A scope negotiation has a deal.
