Long-form vs. short-form text: dwell time vs. completion risk

Long-form vs. short-form text: dwell time vs. completion risk

The question: for a B2B insight, does a long 'click-to-see-more' post or a tight short one perform better?

They trade two algorithm signals against each other. Long posts generate more dwell time — every expand and read-through counts — and signal depth. But length raises completion risk: if readers bail at the 'see more' fold, you've manufactured a low-completion signal that can hurt you.

Three distinctions:
— The first two lines (above the fold) decide everything; a long post with a weak hook gets the worst of both worlds.
— Short posts have higher completion but lower dwell and less room to demonstrate expertise — they're better for one-idea hooks.
— Long posts are saved and re-read more; short posts are liked and scrolled past.

Caveat: 'long wins' studies often confound length with quality — longer posts from serious accounts are also just better written. Directional.

For B2B: match length to idea density. A framework earns length; an observation doesn't. Never pad to hit a word count — dead weight after the fold kills completion.

Bottom line: length is a tool for depth, not a reach hack. Earn every line past the fold.
