Cold open vs context-first on a tutorial channel

A cooking creator opened every video with setup: "So today I want to show you a technique I learned in culinary school." Nice, warm — and dead. Three-second retention was 38% because nothing had happened yet.

And then we tried a cold open: dropping straight into the result with no preamble. Frame one was a knife sliding through a perfect sear while the voice said "This crust is the reason restaurants charge forty dollars." Retention climbed to 64%.

The result held across a month — cold opens beat context-first setups on every tutorial we tested, by 18 to 26 points.

Here's the catch I learned the hard way: cold opens only work when the payoff is visual. If your topic is abstract, the cold open has nothing to show and falls flat.

The lesson: lead with the result when you can film it, lead with context only when you can't.
