Skipping the pixel warm-up cost me a campaign's first week
I launched a fresh pixel straight onto a conversion campaign and the algorithm flew blind for six days.
— The setup: brand-new ad account, brand-new pixel, conversion-objective campaign, $100/day from day one.
— The move (the mistake): no warm-up. I asked a cold pixel with zero conversion data to optimize for purchases immediately.
— The numbers: days 1-6 the algorithm had no signal and spent inefficiently — 0.7x ROAS, $600 spent for $420 back, a $180 hole while it 'learned.' I then ran a second account where I first warmed the pixel with a week of cheap traffic optimized for 'view content' and 'add to cart' before switching to purchase. That account hit 1.8x by day three. Same offer, same creative.
— The lesson: a conversion algorithm with no data isn't optimizing, it's guessing with your budget. The warm-up week isn't wasted — it's the cost of giving the machine a map.
What I'd do differently: Always feed the pixel upper-funnel events cheaply before asking it for purchases. The cold-launch account's first six days — that $180 — was pure avoidable learning cost. Numbers illustrative; the cold-pixel penalty is real on every fresh conversion campaign.
