The niche stat that escaped its niche
The scene: a pet-insurance startup with data only pet owners would care about, and a brief to reach mainstream press. The setup was a topic editors at big outlets would normally ignore. The angle was to find the crossover number, the one pet stat that doubled as a human-economy story: 'Vet bills are rising faster than human medical inflation, up 9% versus 4% last year.'
We pitched it to personal-finance and economics desks, not pet blogs, framing pets as a household-budget story. That reframing was the entire play.
The result: 36 placements, 30 with links, starting with a personal-finance feature that got picked up by a wire service and syndicated into 25 regional papers. The data page pulled 12,000 sessions, mostly from outlets that had never covered the brand's category. A money columnist replied, 'I'd never write about pet insurance, but I'll absolutely write about a bill that's outpacing inflation.'
Lesson: A niche stat stays niche until you find the desk that reads it as a bigger story. Reframe the audience, not the data.
