The study that admitted our own product's limit

The study that admitted our own product's limit

A sleep-tracking brand wanted coverage but kept producing self-serving studies that reporters smelled instantly. The setup was a credibility problem: every number flattered the product. The angle was radical honesty, commissioning research that included an inconvenient truth, that wearable sleep trackers, including theirs, overestimate deep sleep by roughly 26%.

The pitch led with the flaw: 'We tested sleep trackers against lab polysomnography, ours included, and here's where they all get it wrong.'

The result: 31 placements, 25 with links, including a Wired explainer and a major health-site feature, precisely because the brand was first to admit the category's weakness. Trust converted to coverage. The study page pulled 10,000 sessions and the brand's perceived credibility, measured in a follow-up survey, rose noticeably.

A science journalist said, 'A brand criticizing its own product is the only kind of brand study I'll cover, because I can trust the rest of the numbers.'

Lesson: Self-flattering research is invisible to good reporters. Publish the inconvenient finding and the whole study becomes citable.
