A ten-year-old crash, told in fresh numbers
The scene: an insurance-tech client and a looming anniversary of a major financial event that every outlet would mark. The setup was that anniversary coverage is usually nostalgia with no link. The angle was to bring new data to an old story: a decade-over-decade analysis of how household financial resilience had actually changed since the crash.
We pitched the retrospective with a forward number: 'Ten years after the crash, the average American emergency fund is still 30% below where economists say it should be. Here's the decade in data.'
The result: timed to the anniversary week, 27 placements, 22 with links, including a CNBC retrospective and two AP-syndicated pieces. The data page caught the anniversary traffic wave and held 6,000 monthly sessions afterward. A business editor said, 'Everyone sent me memories. You sent me a then-versus-now chart, which is the only thing I can build a piece around.'
We queued the pitch three weeks ahead so it landed before the anniversary planning closed.
Lesson: Anniversaries flood inboxes with sentiment. New data on the old event is the version that gets the link.
