Deep dive: the false bottom that kills your scroll depth
A recurring failure mode in eye-tracking and scroll-map studies is the false bottom — a horizontal band (a full-width image, a centered button surrounded by whitespace, a section divider with a hard background change) that visually signals "the page ends here." Users read it as a stopping cue and abandon, even when 60% of the content sits below.
What the data shows: aggregate scroll-tracking from Nielsen Norman's research consistently finds the steepest drop-off happens not at random depths but at strong visual breaks. In several documented heatmap cases, a centered hero CTA flanked by empty space caused a 20-30% larger drop in scroll-through than the same content with a visible "peek" of the next section.
The mechanism is perceptual closure. The eye treats a band of whitespace plus a symmetric, centered element as a completed gestalt — a finished unit. There is no visual tension pulling the eye onward, so scrolling stops. This is the same reason a footer-styled section mid-page reads as the real footer.
The fix is to engineer continuation cues:
— Never center a standalone element across full width with empty space below it; let the next section's headline or image intrude 40-80px above the fold line so a sliver is always visible.
— Break symmetry: offset content, use an asymmetric two-column layout, or bleed an image past the section edge so nothing reads as a sealed unit.
— Avoid hard full-bleed color changes that mimic a footer in the upper two-thirds of the page.
— On long-form affiliate landers, test where your sharpest scroll drop sits against your section boundaries — if they coincide, you have a false bottom, not a content problem.
The practical implication: before you A/B a new headline to recover lost scroll, check whether the layout itself is telling people to stop. A false bottom looks like disinterest in your analytics but is really a design artifact.
