Deep dive: the experiment where deleting the nav bar raised conversions 100%

Deep dive: the experiment where deleting the nav bar raised conversions 100%

The question: should a dedicated landing page keep the site's main navigation? A frequently-cited analysis by HubSpot, looking across a large set of landing pages, found that removing the top navigation menu was associated with higher conversion — and in individual documented tests, stripping the nav from a campaign lander roughly doubled the conversion rate.

The mechanism is exit reduction via attention focus. A navigation bar is a row of escape hatches. Every link is an alternative to the one action you brought the user here to take. This is the paradox of choice operating at the page level — more options don't empower the user, they dilute commitment and create decision paralysis. On a lander, the only 'choices' should be convert or leave; every additional path is a leak.

There's a scent dimension too. A user arriving from a specific ad has a specific intent. The nav bar invites them to wander off that scent trail into unrelated pages, where the campaign's carefully built context evaporates and they rarely return to convert.

The nuance researchers note: removing nav works for single-goal campaign landers, not for pages where exploration is part of the conversion path (some considered B2B journeys). But for direct-response affiliate landers, the goal is singular.

The practical implication: a campaign lander is not a website page. Strip the global nav, keep the logo non-clickable or pointed at nothing, and leave exactly one forward action. The doubling some teams see isn't from adding anything — it's from removing every exit that competed with the offer.

TL;DR
— HubSpot data and documented tests link removing the nav bar to higher conversion — sometimes roughly doubling it.
— Navigation links are escape hatches; on a single-goal lander every extra path dilutes commitment and breaks the ad's scent.
— Strip global nav from direct-response landers and leave one forward action; keep nav only where exploration is part of converting.
