The watch site that beat bigger competitors by testing in person
Month 1: entered the affordable-watch niche — crowded, dominated by sites that clearly never touched the products they reviewed. 0 traffic, just me and a hunch that 'real' would win.
Months 1-4: slow and discouraging. I bought 8 watches with my own money (~$1,100), wore them, photographed them on my wrist, measured lug-to-lug, noted which bracelets pinched. Published 15 deeply-reviewed posts. Traffic crawled to 3k. I was bleeding money.
The turn came Month 5: Google started favoring my original-photo, hands-on posts over the templated roundups. My wrist shots and 'I wore this for 30 days' angle were exactly the experience signal the algorithm rewarded.
The setback: 3 of the 8 watches I bought were duds in niches with no search volume — $400 of inventory that earned nothing. Original testing isn't free.
Month 11: 0 → 24k sessions, $0 → $1,350/month, in a niche I was told was 'too saturated.'
The takeaway: 'saturated' usually means 'full of sites that fake it.' Actually buying and testing the products was slow and expensive — and it was the entire moat. First-hand experience is the one thing competitors can't outsource cheaply.
