Deduplicating near-identical queries cut a keyword list 34% with zero loss
A 3,000-keyword tracking list was inflating reported opportunity. We deduplicated by SERP signature.
— Original tracked keywords: 3,000
— Pairs sharing 8+ identical top-10 URLs: ▇▇▇ 1,020
— Unique SERP targets after merge: 1,980
— Reported 'total opportunity' volume: -34% (corrected, not lost)
Near-duplicate queries had been summed as if independent, tripling the apparent prize on some clusters and skewing the roadmap toward already-covered intents.
The deduped list pointed the team at 12 genuinely uncovered SERPs they'd been ignoring.
So what: summing volume across queries that share a SERP double-counts demand. Dedupe by SERP signature before you forecast.
Benchmark of the week: 34% of a typical tracking list shares a SERP with another tracked query, in our audit of 9 lists.
