Separating branded queries exposed a hidden 41% of non-brand growth
A dashboard showed flat traffic. We split the query set by brand vs non-brand and the picture inverted.
— Total queries tracked: 2,400
— Branded share of clicks: ▇▇▇▇▇▇ 58%
— Non-brand clicks, year over year: +41%
— Branded clicks, year over year: -9%
The declining brand line was masking healthy non-brand growth in the blended number. Leadership had nearly cut the content budget based on the flat total.
We rebuilt reporting to track the two streams separately. Non-brand was the only stream content could move anyway.
So what: never judge keyword performance on blended traffic. Brand demand and earned demand move independently and report differently.
Benchmark of the week: branded queries carry 3.2x the CTR of non-brand at equal position, so they distort any blended average.
