Polls vs. text posts: cheap reach, expensive trust

Polls vs. text posts: cheap reach, expensive trust

The question: LinkedIn polls reliably out-reach plain text — so should B2B teams lean on them?

The pattern across format studies is consistent: polls win on raw impressions and on a vanity metric (vote = a click that the algorithm reads as engagement) but underperform text on the metrics that matter downstream — meaningful comments, profile visits, and inbound. A vote costs one tap and signals almost nothing about intent.

Three findings:
— Polls inflate 'engagement rate' because votes are counted as interactions; strip votes and the real conversation rate often collapses.
— Poll reach decays faster post-close; text posts keep surfacing via comments for days (longer dwell time — how long a viewer lingers before scrolling).
— Overusing polls trains your audience to tap, not to think with you, which erodes thought-leadership positioning.

Caveat: format effects are audience-specific and platforms re-weight constantly — directional only.

For B2B: use a poll to harvest a question, then publish the analysis as text. The poll is research; the text is the asset.

Bottom line: polls buy reach you can't bank; text buys reputation you can.
