Five sites blamed a core update on toxic links. The recovered ones never disavowed.

Five sites blamed a core update on toxic links. The recovered ones never disavowed.

The myth: core-update losses are link-quality problems.

A consultancy tracked five client sites hit by the same core update. Three disavowed aggressively (3k-9k domains each). Two refused and rebuilt content depth and author bylines instead.

Next core update: both content-focused sites recovered to within 5% of prior traffic. Of the three disavowers, one recovered, two didn't — and the two that didn't had the thinnest content.

Actually, the variable that predicted recovery was content quality, not disavow status. The disavow files were a coin flip dressed as a strategy.

Reality check: core updates reassess content relevance and quality. Pointing the fix at links is treating the wrong patient.
