We gave away the scoop and kept the links
The scene: a climate-tech startup with a genuinely original dataset on corporate emissions reporting, and a temptation to mass-blast it. The setup was that a wide release would have produced shallow coverage. The angle was the opposite of broadcast: hand the full dataset, exclusively, to one investigative data journalist and let them spend three weeks on it.
The pitch was an offer, not an ask: 'You get exclusive access to emissions data on 400 companies, no embargo race, three weeks to do it right. We just want attribution.'
The result: one deeply reported feature in a major paper that named and linked our methodology page, which then triggered 38 secondary pickups as other outlets covered the original story and traced the data back to us. Total: 39 referring domains from a single placement. The methodology page became our highest-authority link source. The journalist said, 'Exclusive access let me do real work instead of rewriting a press release.'
Lesson: One deep exclusive can out-link a hundred-outlet blast, because depth begets coverage of the coverage.
